Board of Directors

Cure Cancer Australia Foundation has played an important role in advancing cancer research in Australia over the last 43 years. Many of Australia’s leading cancer researchers today had their start with Cure Cancer funding.

To date, the Foundation has provided funding of more than $15 million, and awarded grants to over 400 researchers in Australia. In 2012 we plan to fund over 30 new grants at a cost of just on $2.7 million. We are tightly targeted in what we do, and how we fund, always looking for innovation and new approaches while at the same time wanting a measured return on our invested finds.

Our goal is to see a world without cancer; a world in which cancer becomes a manageable disease, and no longer as life threatening as it is today. We will continue to champion and support innovative researchers in their quest to find a cure for cancer.

The Cure Cancer approach covers research investigation across all forms of cancer, in all states of Australia, in all major cancer research institutes, with the focus on young researchers at the beginning of their careers.

We use the NHMRC applicant process to evaluate the science of our applicants. We then turn to the Cure Cancer Medical Grants Advisory Committee, comprised of eminent cancer scientists, to overlay their interpretation of the planned research project, especially looking for new and innovative ideas to explore. Our aim is to fund projects identified by the wider research community, as the most promising in their potential to cure cancer.

While we are proud of our achievements, we are planning to introduce new ways of funding in the future to improve efficiencies, and give researchers the maximum time for their research work, rather than spending time on bureaucratic processes. Since 2008 we have co-funded grants with Cancer Australia, and we will expand these grants from 1 to 2 years from 2012. Additionally we are entering into collaboration funding with a select group of cancer research groups, as well as continuing our direct Cure Cancer “seed funding” grants for one year.

While we can be justifiably pleased with what we have achieved, we know our most important milestone will be the one that puts the Foundation out of business permanently. We can never rest until we get there.
